SOUTH PORTLAND - Some Mainers not only survived day-after-Christmas shopping, they also met a couple of "survivors" along the way.

Jeff Probst and Julie Berry of Gorham chat with other customers Tuesday outside the Target store in South Portland.

Both the host and a former cast member of the reality television show "Survivor" were out shopping Tuesday.
Host Jeff Probst and his girlfriend, former contestant and Maine native Julie Berry, were spotted at the Target store in South Portland in the afternoon, shopping, mingling with customers and posing for pictures.

"We keep running into friends of hers every other aisle," Probst said.

The couple spent the holiday with Berry's family in Gorham.

"We're just having a fun day out," Berry said, before posing for a picture with Probst and a fan.

Berry was a contestant on "Survivor: Vanuatu," which aired in 2004. She began dating Probst after filming the show.

The two volunteered to serve meals at a soup kitchen in Portland on Christmas.

Probst said the experience was a chance to bring some perspective to the "frantic" holiday season.

"It's a chance to remember how fortunate you are," he said.
Probst is taking a break after filming the upcoming season of "Survivor." The show shoots two seasons back-to-back, and then crew members take a couple months off, he said.

The last episode of "Survivor: Cook Islands," aired earlier this month. The next season of "Survivor," filmed in Fiji, begins in February.

Berry said she is pursuing a master's degree in counseling at California State University-Northridge.
